Week 4 - Use of Images in the classroom
Using photos can be very beneficial within the classroom.
A picture really is worth a thousand words but sometimes it's just one word that would be easier for students to grasp with the use of a thousand photos... or just one photo.
Some students are "spacial intelligent." This means they are picture smart and identify more with visual learning.
I know personally that I can be a visual learner. Things make more sense when I can see the visual aspect of it and connect the true image as opposed to creating my own. I can also recall the image and word easier after seeing a photo. Lastly staring at words on a board or paper and become mundane and taking a step in a different direction using photos while learning can be really helpful.
One way of using photos in the classroom, which I have done, is to print out the words along with the images. Go over each image and the word, and then have the students play a match game. When giving them a goal to achieve (doing well in the game) this allows the students to pay more attention and try harder to remember the words and images, also allowing them to remember them long term due to applying the newly learned information.
Another idea, which I would love to do some day, is to go over certain new vocabulary and show photos of each item, and then for homework have the students go on a scavenger hunt either around their house or a grocery store or a park, depending on the vocabulary, and have them create their own images of the vocabulary using photography and then present it in class, again using visuals to connect with language. This, again, gives a goal in mind to achieve while allowing the students to apply the new vocabulary in a visual way.
